Tune into 100.1 FM or AM 1020 KDKA at 7:05 a.m. every Friday for more in-depth movie news, reviews and movie trivia. This week we talk about:
Reminiscence (PG-13)
Starring: Rebecca Ferguson and Hugh Jackman
Hugh Jackman stars as Nick Bannister, a private investigator of the mind. The film takes place in a near future Miami, a city being over taken by the effects of global warming. Bannister provides his customers with a special service, the ability to identify memories and relive them as if they were in real time. Imagine the chance to hug a lost love one or play with that special pup from your youth. Things get interesting when Nick meets and falls for Mae (Rebecca Ferguson, one of my favorite actresses). Mae up and disappears and Nick goes searching through memories to find her and the truth. He discovers that he didn't know Mae nearly as well as he thought. Reminiscence has a film noir quality that I found refreshing and original.
The Protege (R)
Starring: Maggie Q, Michael Keaton and Samuel L. Jackson
Rescued as a child by the legendary assassin Moody (Samuel L. Jackson) and trained in the family business, Anna (Maggie Q) is the world's most skilled contract killer. When Moody - the man who taught her everything she knows and was like a father to her - is brutally killed, Anna vows revenge. Mixing it up with the mysterious killer Rembrandt (Pittsburgh's Michael Keaton) who's connection and attraction to her goes way beyond cat and mouse, Mae learns more about herself than she'd ever believe.
The Night House (R)
Starring: Rebecca Hall
The Night House opens on the day of Beth's husband's funeral. Beth (Rebecca Hall) thought she had a perfect life, a perfect husband and a perfect lake house. All comes crashing down as Beth slowly uncovers the dark secrets of her husband's past. This film will keep you guessing, is Beth really seeing what she sees or hearing what she believes she hears. Suspense, horror and ramped up tension mark The Night House as a watchable film with surprises and twists.
Movie News
In this week's box-office Ryan Reynolds and Free Guy performed better than anticipated hauling in a respectable $28.4 over the weekend. Although this is above what was expected for Free Guy, a movie I thoroughly enjoyed, the total box-office is trending downward as fears of the delta variant seem to be keeping folks out of the theaters. Distributers may begin to shuffle release dates as the reluctance of the box-office audience teeters. Sony has pushed the release date of the Venom sequel, the highly anticipated Venom: Let there be Carnage moved from September 24th to October 15th.
