The man who played mailman Mr. McFeely on the classic WQED Pittsburgh-produced Mister Rogers Neighborhood has left the neighborhood of X (formally Twitter).
He also shared how he thinks Fred Rogers would’ve felt about Donald Trump winning the election last week before the tweet was deleted.
“This election is devastating and Fred would be ashamed,” David Newell wrote.
He also took a shot at “X” owner Elon Musk, who supported Trump’s campaign.
“Elon Musk is not who you think he is,” added Newell.
It’s been over 20 years since Rogers, a native of Latrobe, passed away but his widow gave her thoughts about Trump in 2020 before she died the next year.
Joanne Rogers told The Daily Beast that she thought Trump was “just a horrible person.“
“This man is pathologically ill. Mentally ill,” she added.
She also said at the time that Fred kept his politics quiet because he hosted a children’s program, but she was free to speak out.
It was revealed in the documentary film “Won’t You Be My Neighbor” that Fred Rogers was a life-long Republican.
But, he did have his issues with Republican presidents.
The Nixon administration tried to cut PBS’ funding in half in 1969.
That led to the famous interaction with Mister Rogers testifying on behalf of public television, saving the PBS from any cuts.
It was Republican President George W. Bush that awarded Rogers the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the United States, in 2002.
Joanne also said in the past that while her husband was registered Republican, he voted independently on the issues.
