The plan for a $110 million-dollar entertainment venue and parking garage at the old Civic Arena site have the go ahead from two organizations.
The Sports and Exhibition Authority and Urban Redevelopment Authority both approved plans for the 800,000-square-foot music venue and 910-space parking garage.
Penguins President Kevin Acklin tells The Big K Morning Show, it's a big investment in the area.
“We’re putting millions of dollars into the middle of the city, we’re putting hundred of people to work, family-sustaining union jobs,” said Acklin. “Not only are we trying to win on the ice again with the hockey team, but we’re making the key investments to help make our city better.”
The Penguins own the development rights to the property. The venue is expected to open in January 2026.
A $2-surcharge for tickets sold at the music venue was also approved. 25 percent of those funds raised will go toward Hill District housing development.
But the project isn’t getting support from everyone. Leaders with the Hill District Community Development Corporation says that the developers haven’t been fully upfront. They also would like to see more funding from the surcharge be used for more development.
