The renovation of Pittsburgh’s sister bridges has closed for the Robert Clemente (Sixth Street) Bridge for well over a year now.
One part of the bridges is now so clean, it’s hardly recognizable.
Allegheny County crews have been working on cleaning the pylons on the North Side part of the Andy Warhol (Seventh Street) and Rachel Carson (Ninth Street) Bridges.
Thanks to high -pressure water with “abrasive particles” the masonry has been transformed from black into clean-looking stone.
“The results have been stark, removing decades’ worth of soot and grime and revealing a beautiful white surface,” the county said in a Facebook post.
Crews will soon move on to the Clemente Bridge and then all three will be cleaned on the downtown side.
The piers will be cleaned as well with crews using a boat.
It’s part of the $34.4 million rehabilitation project and is expected to wrap up at the end of this year.
