PITTSBURGH (100.1 FM and AM 1020 KDKA) It is already anticipated that the cleanup process for the train derailment in Harmer will take a number of weeks, if not months.
The company behind the train that derailed, Norfolk Southern, gave KDKA Radio an update regarding the situation.
The update stated that at approximately 3:15 p.m., one of their trains struck an articulated hauler hauling stone that caused the derailment.
The entire train consisted of four locomotives, 109 loaded cars, and 117 empty cars.
17 of those cars, both empty and loaded, were derailed along with a pair of locomotives.
All of the cars that were leaking petroleum distillates have been contained and no immediate signs of danger to the water.
Other cars that fell into the water were carrying plastic pellets that float and are being contained by booms.
The two train operators that were hospitalized from the accident have since been released.
Norfolk Southern stated that they are unable to give a timetable for full repairs on the tracks, bridge, and surrounding area.
