An Allegheny County Sheriff's Deputy who responded to last month's standoff in Garfield failed a drug test in the hours following the incident.

Allegheny County Sheriff Kevin Kraus says the deputy, a seven-year veteran at the office had a hearing and was fired Tuesday.

Drug and alcohol testing are standard procedures after a deputy-involved shooting.

13 deputies were tested hours after the standoff, one of them was positive for cocaine, the other 12 were negative.

“We have a strict zero-tolerance drug-free workplace policy that governs the termination,” said Kraus. “It’s a very unfortunate situation, it’s not easy to report, but I just thought it was right to communities.”

The sheriff did not release the deputy’s name and charges are not expected to be filed.

Kraus says they have programs in place to help deputies that are struggling with drugs or alcohol and are placed into a program, but once an officer tests positive without disclosing, they are fired.
