One year after pandemic began, job losses continue in Pittsburgh

Pitt expert says labor force shows no signs of coming back

Pittsburgh's economy has struggled during the pandemic. Job losses continue a year later.

Christopher Briem with the Center for Social and Urban Research at the University of Pittsburgh broke down the numbers on the Newsradio KDKA Morning Show.

"Yeah here in the region we went down about 200,000 jobs last spring", he says. "I mean, we're still down tremendously about 90,000 jobs. The real challenge though- the labor force is still down and shows no signs of coming back".

Nationally, jobless claims were up by 61-thousand last week pushing the total to 719-thousand, signaling many employers are still cutting jobs even as more businesses reopen. Before the pandemic, the number of people applying for unemployment assistance was typically below 220-thousand.
