Governor Josh Shapiro wants to recruit laid-off federal workers to fill the state's job openings.

At a Harrisburg job fair Wednesday, Governor Shapiro made a pitch to those federal workers who were fired as part of President Trump's initiative to scale back the federal government, to bring them into the state workforce.

The governor signed an executed order to fast track those workers into similar state government jobs.

“I want to fill these vacancies, I want to fill them with federal workers who are looking for a great place to work, where they will be respected and where their skills will be used to help our fellow Pennsylvanians,” said Shapiro.

The governor says there are 5,600 openings for nurses, civil engineers, accountants, and emergency workers.

Allegheny County Executive Sara Innamorato has also announced the county is looking for former federal workers as well.

A job portal has been created for those looking for work and can be found here.

“While federal leaders are creating an atmosphere of chaos and cruelty in the federal government, we are demonstrating that we can run a government that is both competent and compassionate at Allegheny County,” said Innamorato. “We are committed to being an employer that treats its workers with dignity and respect, so in turn they can offer excellent service to the more than 1.2 million residents of Allegheny County.”
