Western PA businesses to see part of $96 million in COVID relief

In its second round of COVID-19 relief grants, more than 5,300 small businesses throughout the state will receive a portion of $96 million.

The money is part of the COVID-19 Relief Statewide Small Business Assistance Program, which is funded through the federal government's Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act.

Allegheny County has the second highest number of businesses to receive the aid at 501. Philadelphia County has the largest number with over 1,200 businesses.

Among other Western PA counties, Beaver County has 43 businesses that will receive money, Butler - 47, Erie - 82, Fayette - 29, Lawrence - 21 and Washington - 55.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has been caused a lot of hardship for our business community, and it has been particularly difficult for Pennsylvania’s small businesses to weather the economic effects of this crisis," said Governor Tom Wolf. "Pennsylvania’s small business owners are community-focused employers, and they drive our economy, so they deserve our support as we continue to navigate this public health crisis.

“As we seek to recover, and rebuild our economy following the downturn caused by this pandemic, it’s critical that we provide opportunities for these businesses to recover and rebound, and this funding will provide much-needed support for businesses in communities across the state.”

According to a study published in August, Pennsylvania small businesses rank among the least adaptable since the coronavirus pandemic hit.
