Allegheny County has 130 municipalities, many of which were created to support once thriving industries along the Mon Valley.
But with eroded tax bases and dwindling populations, a State Senator wants to change state law give them the option of dissolving.
State Senator Nick Pisciottano says his bill would allow municipalities to put the issue on a referendum.
It would require County Council's approval as well.
“It’s not mandatory, we’re not forcing it on anybody,” said Pisciottano. “It’s just another tool in the toolbox for local residents to decide what kind of local government is best for them.”
His bill is awaiting action by the Senate Local Government Committee.
