New parking zones created in Pittsburgh to help delivery drivers

New parking zones in Pittsburgh are aimed at getting delivery drivers in and out. They're in service now and marked by purple signs that say smart loading zones.

When delivery drivers park there, a nearby camera will know and charge an account that drivers make for the service, provided by Automotus.

"While you or I pay for parking, whether if it's on a meter or on an app, today's fleets pay below a 9% adoption rate. To really ensure the curb is used efficiently, we need to make sure we have a system that charges everyone for their fair share," said Automotus' CEO and co-founder Jordan Justus.

There are about a dozen of these zones operating in the city now, including the South Side and Bloomfield.

Delivery drivers who create an account with developer Automotus will be charged each time they use the zone through a license plate reader.

DOMI director Kim Lucas says it's to help drivers that work for companies like DoorDash get in and get out.

"The goal for these if to be a parking meter 2.0. The whole goal of parking meters is, some people think it's to raise revenue, but it's about making sure the curbside space is being used by people who need it the most for those short-term trips.

If you're a regular driver, you'll want to avoid them. The camera will register your plate, and a few days later a bill will come in the mail.
