A police officer involved in a fatal shooting in 2019 in Wilkinsburg has been reinstated by Penn Hills Police.
Robert Gowans returned to work Monday and Chief Howard Burton told KDKA-TV the decision was the result of arbitration.
"The municipality and the police union sat down with a neutral arbitrator and both told their side of the story what they believe was correct," said Chief Burton.
Gowans was fired from the Penn Hills Police station after community pushback over the shooting death of Romir Talley in 2019, while Gowans was a Wilkinsburg Police officer. The Talley family has filed an excessive force lawsuit and the case is in the hands of District Attorney Stephen Zappala.
