It appears that the state economy has rebounded well after previous years, especially in Pittsburgh. Pennsylvania's unemployment rate was unchanged at 3.5 percent in August, the lowest rate going back to 1976. The unemployment in the state now matches the national average according to the state.
Total nonfarm jobs were up 15,800 last month, reaching a record high of 6.1 million. This represented the eighth consecutive month during which the nonfarm employment rate reached a fresh historical peak.
In all 11 "supersectors" monitored, job numbers rose from July to August, with the most significant growth occurring in the education and health services sector, where 7,400 jobs were added, reaching another unprecedented high.
Pittsburgh also showed strong growth through 2023 compared to the previous year. Through July of this year, Pittsburgh saw an average unemployment rate of about 4.0 percent compared to an average of 4.6 percent through July of last year. The July numbers for this year are still preliminary however, but the numbers are expected to be around the listed 3.7 percentage.
