Pittsburgh City Council disbands the mounted police unit in the 2025 budget.

During Wednesday’s council meeting, members approved several last-minute amendments, one proposed by Councilwoman Barb Warwick adds four positions to the Department of Mobility and Infrastructure while phasing out the mounted police unit.

The city spends about $500,000 a year on the unit, which includes six horses, one full-time rider, 10 part-time riders, veterinary bills and general maintenance of the facilities.

Ms. Warwick's amendment would eliminate six months of funding from the unit.

The money the city saves by eliminating the mounted police will help fund the newly created DOMI positions.

Warwick doesn’t know what will happen to the current horses but says they will be taken care of.
