Peduto: $25 million in job cuts coming to Pittsburgh if financial aid doesn't come from Washington

Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto has unveiled his delayed city budget for next year. He says there will be no tax hike but spending cuts and layoffs in 2021 without additional Covid relief from Washington.

The city's $120 million fund balance helped forestall spending cuts during COVID.

Saying the cupboard is bare, the mayor described the city's financial situation in stark terms.
"If we do not get aid from Washington, it wil require the city to make $25.6 million in additional personnel cuts starting July 1," said Peduto.

Peduto says that would mean 634 city workers laid off. He didn't say from which departments. The mayor delivered his delayed 2021 budget message to council, calling for a $590 million operating and $125 million capital budget.

Until then, no cost of living increases for non-union workers and most vacant positions are eliminated.
