PITTSBURGH (100.1 FM and AM 1020 KDKA) — In a Thursday statement, the Dick's Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon announced on their Facebook page that an in-person race is "effectively" canceled.
As the statement illuminates, the decision was ultimately made by the City of Pittsburgh with it not being able to grant the necessary permit for the event.
Those who were already registered can seek a full refund or participate in a virtual rendition of the marathon.
Representatives of the marathon go on, citing the difficulty of having large groups of people participating in the event while maintaining COVID-centric safety and public health guidelines.
Officials are optimistic that other late-summer events, such as the Fleet Feet Liberty Mile, the EQT Pittsburgher 10 Miler, and the Richard S. Caliguiri City of Pittsburgh Great Race, will go on as scheduled, however.
