Police are reminding pet owners that abandoning an animal is a crime after a dog was recently left tied up outside the Human Animal Rescue overnight in the rain.
Pittsburgh Police say on the night of July 8th an officer spotted a female pit bull outside of the rescue on Western Avenue in the North Side. The dog had been tied up but got loose.
The officer was able to catch the dog and brought it to the station where it was fed and kept comfortable overnight because being taken to the Humane Animal Rescue when it opened the next morning.
Officials say the older dog is getting medical attention and is not yet ready to be adopted.
“The proper way to surrender a pet you can't care for is to make an appointment with a shelter. There are also resources available to owners who require behavioral or veterinary assistance for their pets in order to keep them,” authorities said in a statement.
