PITTSBURGH (100.1 FM and AM 1020 KDKA) As mandates regarding the COVID-19 virus continue to be adjusted across the country, the Pittsburgh Public Schools have made a change to their mask mandate.
The PPS board of directors approved in a 7-2 vote that they will begin to loosen their mask mandate, but only for a certain group of students.
The new rules state that students involved in performing arts will be permitted to go without a mask while participating in theatrical or musical performances.
Students not performing will be required to continue wearing a mask.
Dance students will also have to continue wearing a mask unless an instructor deems the activity strenuous and social distance can be maintained.
Board members argued that it is wrong to be pulling back restrictions for only a certain group of students.
Those board members are focused on getting to a point they can move forward without masking for everyone.
Board President Sala Udin stated that despite the comfort level of wearing a mask, they are the safest option for students and faculty.
