Pittsburgh Public Schools needs more support to combat violence

PITTSBURGH (Newsradio KDKA) - Pittsburgh Public Schools continues to see violence and other disruptions in their classrooms.

Nina Esposito-Visgitis, President of the Pittsburgh Federation of Teachers, says the schools need more resources.

"We don't have the support available in our schools and it is so frustrating to our educators who are working so hard," Esposito-Visgitis said during the KDKA Radio Morning Show Thursday.

The union leader believes this is a problem that is happening all across the country.

"Nobody wants a student suspended," said Esposito-Visgitis. "We want our kids in their seats, we want them learning, but you have to give teachers tools. And I hear this over and over, you have to have a consequence."

She says consequences will deter other students from acting out.
