Winter weather is taking its toll on the roads, making for tougher driving conditions.
Drivers in western Pennsylvania are accustomed to the occasional pothole - but PennDOT's Lori Musto says we've had perfect pothole weather this winter.
“The water that gets into the cracks, it freezes it expands then when it thaws, it goes a little bit deeper, we have that cycle, it keeps expanding freezing and thawing, it creates like a void, then when it warms up like we have now, that’s when we get the pot holes,” said Musto.
During the winter, there's only a temporary fix.
“Cold patch is an asphalt material but it stays flexible, but it is not a permanent repair,” said Musto. “So, we clean out the pothole the best we can, shovel the cold mix it and tamp it down real quick and we move on to the next one.”
She said with warmer weather expected in the coming days, crews will be out applying that fix to potholes in the area.
