Pittsburgh Regional Transit is asking PennDOT for permission to transfer more than 100-million dollars from its capital funding to its operating side.
If approved, that would avert the rate hikes and service cuts contained in the budget the transit agency approved a few weeks ago.
PRT spokesman Adam Brandolph says this is not an ideal solution, but calls it the best option to protect its riders.
"It's a shift of our own funds that we would've otherwise used for infrastructure projects to be put into service so that we can avoid the drastic service cuts and fare increases for up to the next two years," he said.
He says they expect a fast decision from PennDOT.
