Quality of Life mandates could be put in action for Pittsburgh

Too much garbage or high grass could be costly in the future in Pittsburgh.

In addition, every day there is a violation may be considered a separate offense, with additional fines.

City Council is considering a measure to fine residents or businesses for quality of life violations like: more than a cubic foot of debris, waste, rubbish or garbage, and grass or weeds over 10 inches.

The bill comes from Council member Bruce Kraus, who wants to address poorly maintained property.

"Costly problems that contribute to the deterioration of property values and general disorder in the community"

Residents would need to keep their trash and recycling containers in the back of their property as well as keep them sanitary and secure with close-fitted lids.

Any police or code enforcement officer or other public official could write a ticket to a property owner or occupant for a violation.

Fines start at $35, plus any cleanup costs. The second violation costs $50 and the third is 100 bucks.

An appeal would allow anyone who receives a ticket to submit an appeal within 15 days of receiving the ticket. Residents would need to pay the ticket first and if the appeal goes through, they would be refunded.

"I believe it will ultimately serve the residents of Pittsburgh much better than how we have been able to serve them in the past." Kraus claimed.
