We got off pretty easy last winter.
Last February was the least snowy on record, with only 0.2 inches of snow falling.
According to two famous almanacs, that all changes winter of 2024.
The Farmer’s Almanac and Old Farmer’s Almanac are rivals but both are predicting more of an active winter for our area.
First the Farmers’ Almanac, which has been around since 1818, says “The BRRR is back!”
For the Pittsburgh area that means “frosty, flakey and slushy” and also the possibility of storms and cold weather.
The first snow of the season is expected in November with the possibility of a big storm to start December.
No white Christmas this year, but after the New Year, there could be a few big storms that come through in January and February with very cold temperatures.
If you travel in the winter, things are expected to be unseasonably cold in the south in places like Texas.
The Southeast will be wetter than normal a few frosts but overall average temperatures.
Now, on to the rival Old Farmer's Almanac, since 1792, which predicts “Cold, Snowy” for a majority of the nation, that includes western Pennsylvania, calling this coming season a “winter wonderland.”
For our region, the Ohio Valley, The Old Farmer's Almanac says there will be “above-normal precipitation and snowfall overall.”
The most snow will fall in late December through mid-January and once again late-January through Mid-February.
The Old Almanac also says don’t expect a white Christmas.
When it comes to temperatures, expect a colder than normal winter with cold snaps in late December into January and late January through mid-February.
