After nearly 35 years on your television screens, a Pittsburgh reporter is hanging up his microphone to pursue a full-time career in acting.

WTAE’s Sheldon Ingram will retire from local news at the end of May after 34 years on TV.

Ingram tells KDKA Radio acting is something he’s always wanted to do and was a long-term goal of his.

“After 30 years, it was time to look at the next chapter, which is acting,” said Ingram.

While he’s leaving local reporting to pursue his passion, Ingram says he enjoyed traveling all around Western PA.

“So much to remember, from the amazing people, to witnessing the Pittsburgh Renaissance and rebirth, to traveling the vast seven county region,” said Ingram. “My career spans 40 years, which includes stops in Chattanooga, Norfolk, and Atlanta as an intern reporter for CNN.”

Ingram is no stranger to acting. He had a high-profile guest role as deputy mayor on “Law & Order: SVU” several years ago and has also appeared on local stages around Pittsburgh over the years.

For what’s next, Ingram says, “my acting career will include film, TV, live theater, and voiceover projects, which include commercials for national brands, TV promos, movie trailers, narration and animation.”

He’ll also star in the stage play “Coconut Cake” at the New Horizon Theater, beginning May 28.

“I will stay busy as a storyteller,” says Ingram, who adds he is grateful for all of the people he’s met across Southwestern PA over the past three-plus decades.

“I am grateful to every person who welcomed me to tell their stories, the uncomfortable stories, the exciting stories, the educational stories. I became a wiser man over the years because of my exposure to the amazing and wonderful residents of southwestern Pennsylvania.”

Ingram’s last day will be May 29 on channel 4.
