A new warning about scammers conning victims out of thousands of dollars.

The Allegheny County Sheriff's Office says one victim lost more than $8000 after being told they would be fined for missing jury duty.

Ross Township Police are investigating the case. The victim’s funds were tracked to a cryptocurrency exchange in France.

Sheriff Kevin Kraus says his office will never call and ask for money, let alone cryptocurrency.

“They even spoof our phone number, to make the phone number look legitimate,” said Sheriff’ Kraus. “Basically, threaten people if they don’t comply and forward the money they’ll be arrested, which we don’t do any business in that manner.”

Kraus says if you get a call like this, hang up and call the sheriff's office at 412-350-4700.
