The Fifth Judicial District of Pennsylvania announced Friday it has contracted Latrobe based Adelphoi, which provides services to at-risk youth and their families, to offer detention services for juveniles in Allegheny County.
In particular, Adelphoi will operate the Shuman Juvenile Detention Center in Lincoln-Lemington, which has been closed since 2021.
Adelphoi will initially serve 12 youth at the site.
Construction of the full detention portion of Shuman will be ongoing, and is expected to be completed by the end of the year, with the ability to serve 60 juveniles.
Common Pleas President Judge Kim Berkeley Clark made statement about the opening:
Adelphoi has a proven track record as a leading and highly respected agency that provides all levels of trauma-informed and evidence-based serves for delinquent and dependent children. This is a crucial step toward creating a safer and more supportive environment for juveniles in the county," said President Judge Kim Berkeley Clark.
"The opening of the center will greatly enhance the safety of all communities in Allegheny County, consistent with balanced and restorative justice – the mission of the Pennsylvania Juvenile Justice System.
