Pittsburgh Police are investigating a reported card skimmer at a Brookline gas station.
Authorities say it was found Wednesday at the 7-Eleven on Brookline Boulevard.
Similar devices have been reported at grocery stores over the past couple of months in New Kensington, Lower Burrell, Plum, Scott, Greenfield and McKeesport.
Lt. Adam Reed with the Pennsylvania State Police tells KDKA Radio there are different kinds of skimmers but in general, they are fairly small.
“They are designed, more or less, to sit right over the credit card reader on the gas pump or cash register, for example,’ said Reed.
A few warning signs that a skimmer could be in place:
Loose card readers
Card reads that appear “unnecessarily bulky”
Keypad seems “spongey” or doesn’t appear to be aligned with card reader
Instead of swiping or inserting a card, State Police say it's safer to pay by tapping a card or with a mobile device.
