A big fire followed the catastrophic failure of a transformer last night at the Duquesne Light facility on Brunot Island.

Black smoke rising into the air could be seen for miles.

Fire crews were called to the island around 8 p.m. Pittsburgh Public Safety said the blaze and "any related hazards are contained to Brunot Island."

In a statement, Duquesne Light said there were no injuries or power outages.

Pittsburgh Public Safety says they worked with Duquesne Light crews on the land side in Marshall-Shadeland to devise a plan to learn as much as they could about the fire.

They accessed the island by barge to get equipment over to extinguish the fire.

Norfolk Southern has a rail line that crosses over the island. That was shut down for a short time and has since reopened.

"Duquesne Light and the Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire will continue to investigate the cause and monitor any further impact," Pittsburgh Public Safety said in a statement.
