A Kittanning man is facing a stiff fine.
The man was caught with a loaded .380 caliber handgun as he was going through a security checkpoint on Wednesday.
The Westmoreland County Park Police confiscated the weapon and allowed the man to board the place after questioning him.
This is the first gun to be caught at the airport this year.
In 2020, only one other gun was caught at the security checkpoint.
Earlier this week, TSA officers caught their fourth gun this month at Pittsburgh International Airport, prompting the TSA's Federal Security Director for the airport to issue a response.
Karen Keys-Turner said “The prevalence of guns being brought to our checkpoints by travelers has got to stop.
"Guns are not allowed to be carried onto planes; with or without a concealed carry permit. That’s no secret. It's common sense. No guns on planes has been a policy since long before TSA was established 19 years ago, so it’s nothing new. All of these individuals now face stiff Federal financial civil penalties that can cost them thousands of dollars."
So far on 2021, five guns have been caught by the TSA at Pittsburgh International. In 2020, the total number was 21.
Passengers can travel with firearms, but they must comply with TSA rules in order to do so.
Getting caught with a firearm at the airport can lead to a fine of more than $13,000.
