Five defendants and two local nursing facilities have been indicted by a federal grand jury on multiple charges including fraud.
Federal and state officials claim that Brighton and Mt. Lebanon Rehabilitation falsified staff and patient information to get more money from Medicaid and Medicare.
Included in the indictment are the following names: Sam Halper, Eva Hamilton, Susan Gilbert, Michelle Romeo and Johnna Haller.
Christopher Giordano with the FBI says CEO Sam Helper is among those named in the indictment.
"The defendants named in the indictment carried out an elaborate scheme. The CEO of this company reaped the proceeds of our taxpayer-funded healthcare systems."
The defendants named face charges of defrauding the United States and several other health care fraud charges.
A separate investigation is being conducted looking into Brighton's mishandling of the COVID outbreak where dozens of patients died.
"Our office will continue to hold individuals and facilities that break the law accountable," said U.S. Attorney Cindy Chung.
"Health care fraud is not a victimless crime. It affects everyone—individuals and businesses alike—and causes tens of billions of dollars in losses each year."
