Unclear future of steel production in Mon Valley

US Steel cancelled a $1.5 billion project last week that would have upgraded the plant in the Mon Valley.

"This is a  huge hit, not just for the Mon Valley, but for the entire Pittsburgh region and our local economy," Rep. Austin David said during the KDKA Radio Morning Show Wednesday. He represents parts of the Mon Valley.

Davis said he met with US Steel representatives as recently as a month ago, and there was no indication that the steel manufacturer was considering to scrap the plan.

Gov. Tom Wolf told the KDKA Radio Morning Show Tuesday that he has yet to speak with any officials from US Steel.

"They don't seem to really have an interest in talking to some of the local elected officials at this point. I know there are a number of elected officials that have reached out and requested to meet with them, and really have not gotten a response," Davis said. "They clearly just didn't want to have the conversation which is why they rolled it out the way they did."

Green feels that US Steel has broken their promise, and questions the future of steel making in the Mon Valley.
