The family of a woman who died after falling into a sinkhole in Unity Township nearly two years ago has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against U.S. Steel and another business.
The lawsuit says Elizabeth Pollard, who was looking for her cat, stepped out of her car that she parked at Monday's Union Restaurant. when she fell into a sinkhole from an abandoned mine.
Her body was found 20 days later.
The lawsuit names the restaurant and U.S. Steel as defendants.
“Elizabeth Pollard should still be alive. The defendants’ alleged failure to provide and maintain a safe environment caused her preventable and untimely death,” a statement from Morgan & Moran attorney’s John Morgan and Mark Malone write. “This lawsuit seeks to hold these entities accountable for their alleged negligence, which has robbed a family of a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother. The Pollards deserve justice, and we will fight to ensure no other family is forced to endure a devastating loss like this.”
The lawsuit says neither the mine owners nor the property owners took adequate measures to address the risk.
