A new campaign is calling on UPMC to pay local taxes: UPMC - It's Time To Pay What You Owe.
It's the latest in a stalemate between city officials, labor groups and Pittsburgh's biggest nonprofits over the organizations' tax exempt status.
Local groups like Pittsburgh United, and local leaders like State. Rep and candidate for congress Summer Lee and Pittsburgh Councilwoman Deb Gross, accused UPMC of getting a free pass thanks to their non-proft status.
Gross said the city is putting the healthcare giant on its back “We could have a beautiful, healthy city where we have the things we need on a daily basis if UPMC would pay what they owe.”
It's long been a battle between officials and the city's biggest non-profits, which aren't taxed the same way as corporations.
City Controller Michael Lamb backed the campaign, saying in a statement the city's biggest nonprofits like UPMC and Highmark need to come to the table.
UPMC did not respond to request for comment, but has long pointed to its charitable contributions to the community.
