More and more people in the Pittsburgh region are being hospitalized due to COVID-19. Dr. Don Yealy, the Chief Medical Officer at UPMC, offers this startling statistic:

“We’re at the second highest number of people admitted to the hospital since this entire pandemic began,” said Dr. Yealy. “It’s not as big as it was in December as it was last year when we really had no vaccines, but it is the second highest number, it is a real thing and it hurts people.”

Dr. Yealy tells Marty Griffin on NewsRadio KDKA that the recent uptick in activity is due to people congregating together more and encourages people to act smart.

Socially distance, stay away from big crowds, and wear the masks, unless you're completely certain everyone else is vaccinated.

Yealy says even though we want to be done with the virus, it’s not done with us.

While he believes the pandemic will shift into “something different” but will only do so if people stay apart, wear their masks and get vaccinated.
