UPMC's Chief Medical Officer says the number of COVID cases in the region is growing because the viral variant circulating now is very contagious.

Dr. Don Yealy says it's wise to put on a mask in certain situations, like at a wedding or a funeral.

“Keeping the virus from entering your nose and throat with a well-fitting, high-quality mask is still a smart thing. You don’t have to do it 24/7.”

On NewsRadio KDKA with Marty Griffin, Dr. Yealy said people with underlying conditions are more susceptible to serious illness and he urges them to protect themselves from the virus.

The best way to minimize your risk is to get vaccinated.
