UPMC says new COVID treatment cuts risk of death by 70%

UPMC has released encouraging data about a COVID-19 treatment.

Monoclonal antibodies help block the virus and slow down infection.

It's a treatment authorized by the FDA for emergency use.

UPMC says monoclonal antibodies cut the risk of hospitalization and death in their high risk COVID patients by about 70 percent.

"The possibility that a treatment to prevent serious complications of COVID-19 would be transformative for this pandemic," said UPMC's Dr. Graham Snyder.

Monoclonal antibody treatments from Regeneron and Eli Lilly are currently available through a one-time IV infusion.
