A bridge in McKeesport is closed until further notice after a recent inspection.
The Versailles Avenue bridge was scheduled for an inspection in April, but city officials pushed to have it done earlier this week over weather-related concerns.
In a press release, McKeesport Mayor Michael Cherepko said the preliminary results of that inspection led to an immediate closure.
He said the bridge has deteriorated, especially on one side.
Plus, fluctuating temperatures could cause additional damage.
"We received notification Thursday evening that we should be working to close this bridge within 10
days," Cherepko said. "It is in the best interest of the safety of our residents that we are proactive in
closing this bridge immediately, rather than waiting for any time at all."
Concrete barriers were put in place at both ends of the bridge on Friday morning. The official detour will take Coursin Street to Fifth Avenue, to Evans Avenue to avoid residential areas.
