Police are warning of an online puppy scam for would-be pet owners.

The Whitehall Police Department described a scenario in which a family purchased a puppy online by sending a gift card as payment and was given an address at at which they were told they could pick up their new family friend.

However, when they arrived, there was no puppy to be had and nobody associated with the purchase was at the address. Just a confused resident.

Police offered up several tips to help potential owners avoid scams, including:

"1. Beware of extra fees associated with shipping, veterinary care, or Coronavirus precautions.

"2. Requests for payment via wire transfers, gift cards, or an offer to mail you a check are all tell-tale signs of a scam.

"3. Consider doing a quick online search for the specific breed offered for sale. You may just find the picture associated with the ad is one that is randomly available on the internet."

Police say you should also see the animal you intend to adopt in person prior to making any payments.
