Reports from the scene say a woman was killed Friday morning near a big construction project in Oakland.

The woman was hit in the head by a large cylinder in the construction area near the Petersen Event Center.

Pittsburgh Police say it happened on the 3700 block of Terrace Street around 10:40 a.m.

Witnesses tell police the woman was walking with colleagues when a large steel drum broke free from a construction site.

“The drum rolled down a hill within the construction site, went through adjacent construction fencing, and struck the victim on the sidewalk,” police said in a release. “The drum continued to roll across the street before finally coming to rest against a pick-up truck.”

People in the area tried lifesaving measures before EMS arrived but were unsuccessful.

Pitt Police reported traffic issues on Desoto Street between Sutherland Drive and O’Hara Street due to the accident.
