The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued a recall over more than 7.5 million Baby Shark bath toys after it was discovered they carry a risk of injuring children.
The toys were manufactured by Zuru LLC, a California-based company that imports Chinese-made products. Now, the company is recalling 6.5 million of its full-size Robo Alive Junior Baby Shark Sing Swim Bath Toys and 1 million of its mini-size Robo Alive Junior Mini Baby Shark Swimming Bath Toys, a CPSC press release shared.
The agency shared that toys were sold at Target, Walmart, Ross, and Walgreens. The full-sized toys were sold between May 2019 and March 2023, and the mini toys were sold from July 2020 to June 2023.
So far, there have been 12 reports of children playing with the toys and suffering “impalement injuries, lacerations, and puncture wounds” after falling or sitting on the full-size version of the Baby Shark toy, the release shared.
The children who suffered injuries in the reports suffered them to their “genital, anorectal and facial areas,” the release said.
The CPSC shared that nine of the 12 injuries required medical attention, with children getting stitches or other care. There haven’t been any reports of the Mini Baby Shark toys causing injuries, but the recall was issued out of caution.
“When using the recalled bath toys, particularly in a bathtub or wading pool, a child can slip and fall or sit onto the hard plastic top fin of the shark,” the release said.
Consumers with the toys are being advised to stop using them immediately. Zuru is asking customers to reach out to the company so that it can issue them a full refund.
