“I am deeply saddened by the loss of life and devastation caused by the earthquake in Morocco,” President Joe Biden said in a Saturday statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with all those impacted by this terrible hardship.”

According to a safety alert, the earthquake struck near Imintanoute, Morocco, approximately 60 miles southwest of Marrakech. It was felt throughout the country. There is also a risk of additional earthquakes, aftershocks and tsunamis.

CNN reported that the earthquake was a magnitude 6.8 quake. As of Saturday morning, more than 1,000 people were reported dead from the earthquake, making it the deadliest Morocco has seen in decades.

While the epicenter was in the High Atlas Mountains, the impact of the quake can be seen in the city of Marrakech, a popular tourist destination. There, historic walls have been damaged. Since roads have been blocked by debris, rescue teams are struggling to get to affected areas.

“My administration is in contact with Moroccan officials,” said Biden. “We are working expeditiously to ensure American citizens in Morocco are safe, and stand ready to provide any necessary assistance for the Moroccan people. The United States stands by Morocco and my friend King Mohammed VI at this difficult moment.”
