In what appears to have been a random shooting, a U.S. Postal Service employee is dead after he was gunned down while delivering mail on Friday, authorities say.
The incident happened just after 4:30 p.m. as the 44-year-old carrier was making deliveries on Milwaukee's north side, according to police officials.
The employee was identified as Aundre Cross, who worked for the post office for 18 years. He was pronounced dead at the scene, police say.
In a statement, Mayor Cavalier Johnson has vowed to catch the shooter in what he calls an "alarming" crime.
"The postal worker in this homicide was a public servant, which makes this crime even more disturbing," Johnson said. "Criminals responsible for death and harm in our city must be held accountable."
The United States Postal Inspection Service said the shooter was in a silver Audi Q5 SUV with tinted windows.
So far, no arrests have been made. A reward of up to $50,000 is being offered in the case.
"Postal Inspectors want justice for the tragic homicide of Letter Carrier Aundre Cross just as much as the city of Milwaukee," USPIS said in a statement. "As a Postal employee, Mr. Cross is, and always will be, a member of our USPS community. We continue to ask for the public's assistance of providing tips which may support our investigation, no matter how trivial the information offered may seem."
