Dept. of Agriculture reminds PA farmers of tax credit deadline

HARRISBURG (100.1 FM and AM 1020 KDKA) — Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding spoke out on Friday to remind Pennsylvania farmers to get in their tax credit applications before the March 1 deadline.

The tax credits are available through the Resource Enhancement and Protection Program (REAP) and larger Pennsylvania Farm Bill to help improve soil condition and water quality.

There is $13 million worth of the tax credits available for Pennsylvanian farms.

"Taking care of the soil and water is an economic imperative for our farms," said Redding. "REAP tax credits are just one element of our strategy to support farmers as they feed our future and grow a viable, sustainable Pennsylvania farm economy."

The REAP program incentivizes best management practices and using ecological friendly equipment.

The credits will allow farmers who are trying to work more sustainably to obtain the tools and capital needed to maintain the greener farming methods.

Some of the equipment, for example, would reduce nutrient and sediment runoff, improve the state waterways, and enhance the soil quality.

Eligible farmers can receive upward of $250,000 over the span of a seven-year window.
