Energy costs are increasing by as much as 50 percent across Pennsylvania.

The Public Utility Commission says that's the case for all state-regulated utilities.

The reason is: increased distribution and supply charges. They make up 40 to 60 percent of utility bills. In the Pittsburgh area, Duquesne Light customers will see an estimated 20 percent increase.

Penn Power and West Penn Power customers will see rates go up a fraction of a percent, while Wellsboro Electric will see the largest increase, 34 percent.

The best way to save this winter is to pay attention to the thermostat.

Every degree you raise or lower the temperature can impact costs by up to three percent.
