Law enforcement is warning the public about a recent spike in fraudulent unemployment claims.

Companies are receiving claim notices from employees who are still working.

Pennsylvania State Police Trooper Bruce Morris said that's a big red flag the employee has been a victim of identity theft.

"Time is of the essence," he said. "People get notified in any way, shape or form, it's time to start looking into it."

Morris said police have seen a spike in fraudulent claims over the last two weeks.

"The different stations, we encompass seven here at Troop C," he said. "Probably four to five of those stations are receiving four, five or six fraudulent claim reports each day."

Morris says the employee's information was likely leaked in a data breach.

UPMC employees are among those reporting they've been targeted.

A company spokesperson tells News Radio KDKA, their human resources department has been getting unemployment claim notices for current employees.

In an internal letter to employees, UPMC said they do not believe their systems have been breached.

The Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry suggests anyone who believes they've been a victim of fraudulent unemployment claims should call police, call the state's fraud hotline at (800) 692-7469 or file a report on the state's website.
