Pennsylvania extends Johnson & Johnson COVID vaccine pause

It'll be a little while longer before Johnson & Johnson Vaccines will be used again in Pennsylvania.

The Department of Health announced Thursday it is extending its pause statewide on the administration of the J&J Vaccine for four more days, until April 24, after the federal government said it needed more time to investigate issues of blood clots associated with that vaccine.

The department had originally set April 20 as a deadline.

The CDC Advisory Committee on Immunizations held a meeting Wednesday but did not take a vote to alter the recommended pause in use of the vaccine.

"The safety procedures built into the vaccination process are working and should instill confidence in the safety and effectiveness of the available COVID-19 vaccines," Acting Secretary of Health Alison Beam said. "I urge individuals who have appointments scheduled to receive a Pfizer or Moderna vaccination to keep those appointments."

The CDC said Wednesday one case of clotting involved a 26-year-old woman from Pennsylvania. She has since recovered.
