PITTSBURGH (Newsradio KDKA) - U.S. Senator Pat Toomey, of Pennsylvania, had a long conversation with U.S. Steel CEO David Burritt regarding the steel producer's pullback from the Mon Valley upgrade.
Toomey told the KDKA Radio Morning show the company is moving forward with other plans.
"The impression I got was that the company just decided they have to accelerate their decarbonization - their push to reduce their carbon footprint much faster - and that means they've got to invest in other places and move in other directions," Toomey said.
The long delays in the permitting created a window of opportunity for the steel corporation to consider a change.
"My understanding is had this investment gone forward, the Mon Valley works would have been among the most efficient, cleanest sources of steel anywhere in the country, and we're going to miss a big opportunity," said Toomey.
At the end of April of this year, U.S. Steel canceled plans for a $1.5 billion project at their Mon Valley Works. The plans were first put into motion in 2019 and the cancellation came as a surprise to many in the region.
