State Rep. gives firsthand details why sex abuse bill is critical

The Pennsylvania House approved a bill Wednesday to establish a two-year window for civil lawsuits over childhood sexual abuse.

Two weeks ago, the legislature finished the first round of approvals for a constitutional amendment to accomplish the same goal. Supporters say the proposal and the amendment are ways to get justice for victims who lost the right to sue when they turned 18 or were young adults, depending on state law at the time.

State Representative Jim Gregory, a survivor of child sexual abuse, is the prime sponsor of the bill.

"As someone who has suffered a sexual abuse, I have no interest in the opportunity to sue anyone because my perpetrators were my peers. One does not still live, he took his own life years later. And the other, I have no entity to go after," Gregory said during the KDKA Radio Morning Show.

Gregory said he understands what happens to people with the secondary trauma that's perpetrated on others because of what's happened to them.
