The Wolf Administration is proposing updates to the state's nursing home regulations.
If passed, it would be the first update to the regulations since 1999.
Acting State Secretary of Health Alison Beam said the proposed regulations were created as a series of five packages.
"Outdated regulations have ignored industry changes and best practices related to person-centered care," she said. "That's why we're proposing to align with federal regulations. This will allow Pennsylvania to remain current while also avoiding another generational lapse in regulatory updates."
Beam announced the first package of proposed regulations Wednesday.
The key change in the first package would increase required daily direct care for each resident from 2.7 to 4.1 hours.
"Providing 4.1 hours of direct care not only aligns with best practices and existing research, but it prioritizes resident wellbeing," Beam said.
The package also requires skilled nursing facilities to comply with the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services regulations and requirements.
The first package will be published in the PA Bulletin by the end of the month, kicking off a 30-day public comment period.
