Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf wants to hold accountable charter and cyber schools in the state.
On Friday, he laid out his plan for that accountability.
Wolf says the state's current charter school law is outdated and flawed and is considered one of the worst in the country.
He says his plan would hold the schools accountable for the quality of education, protect taxpayers from rising costs and increase transparency of for-profit companies that run some schools.
"Every child in Pennsylvania deserves a high-quality education that prepares them to succeed in life, but our current law lets some charter schools perform poorly at the expense of students enrolled in traditional district schools," said Gov. Wolf. "The pandemic has made the problem worse as charter school enrollment has increased. We must hold charters accountable to students, parents and taxpayers. Anything less should be unacceptable."
According to the Wolf administration, $2.1 billion was spend on charter and cyber schools last year. The administration says that amount will increase by over $400 million this year.
